Acne vulgaris is an inflammatory disorder of the skin involving the pilosebaceous units (hair follicles and their sebaceous glands).It affects mainly the teenagers and young adults, although 10-20% of adults may continue to be affected by it. It is more common in males than in females. Mostly found on face, upper arms, trunk and back, the major concern is regarding the appearance.

Causes

It occurs by hypersensitivity of the sebaceous glands to a normal circulating level of androgens, which are worsened by P. Acnes and inflammation. Causes includes the following:

• Genetics in 80% of cases
• Certain medications like steroids, anticonvulsants and lithium.
• Excess exposure to sunlight
• Wearing shoulder pads, headbands, backpacks, etc which are tight.
• Endocrine disorders like PCOS and pregnancy.

Factors which can aggravate acne include:

• Food with high sugar content like dairy products, chocolate, junk food, etc
• Oil-based cosmetics
• Pre-menstrual period
• Severe anxiety and anger

Management

In severe cases, acne can lead to permanent scarring and hence it needs early treatment. Doctors can easily diagnose acne clinically. Some cases may require hormone level assessment as well.
Proper skincare and dietary measures are recommended for acne treatment and prevention. These include washing skin not more than twice daily, using fragrance-free moisturizer, using oil-free cosmetics, and avoiding high sugar content in diet.

Action of ingredients:

Berberis aquifolium: It is an effective remedy, due to action of it’s major constituent, Berberine, for persistent acne, pimples, blotches and roughness of the skin of the face. Dry, rough, scaly skin with eruptions on scalp, face and neck. Clears complexion.

Thuja occidentalis: Thuja contains alpha thujine, known for its action on acne. Indicated for Oily skin with dilated pores. Pimples mainly on the face, especially on the forehead, upper lip, nose and chin. Freckles and blotches. Dry skin, with brown spots. Eruptions only on covered parts; worse after scratching. Acne which is large, slow to resolve and leaves a bump after healing. Nodular and cystic acne, sensitive parts.

Calendula officinalis: A most remarkable healing agent, applied locally. Calendula in suspension or in tincture is used topically for treating acne, reducing inflammation, controlling bleeding, and soothing irritated tissue. Promotes healthy granulations and rapid healing by first intention.
